And lest I say, 18 months of Covid along the way..... I will not detail everything that's taken place since 2017 but will pick out a few highlights. Bearing in mind this is a quilting blog, let me not digress!

Referring back to my last post, my beautiful whole cloth quilt arrived back safe and sound with one or two marks on it but after a journey around the UK and USA, it did not suffer too badly. It did not win a ribbon but received encouraging comments from the judges. My friend Claire Wallace from Handy Quilter SA won first prize and was awarded "Best of Country". What an outstanding achievement!

I would like to show a table runner that I made for our veterinary surgeon. A little background to the story.....I have a beautiful white cat that we found on the farm in Harrismith. Purdy, who is on the front cover of my blog, adopted Snowball and cared for him, cleaning him from top to tail in the days following his "capture". Snowball has a blue and a green eye. Isn't he cute?!

Snowball

Well, his mom knew something that we didn't realize hense him being deserted. Over the last 10 years he has suffered with an acute recurring ear infection. We are really blessed to have Arina as our vet. Dr Arina Pimoshenko has worked with Snowball bringing him to a place where after many years of administering drops into his ears, to now regularly cleaning his ears which prevents the infection advancing to a place where he needs antibiotics every few months. Anyway, after this rather long background, I made this table runner for her to show my appreciation for her dedication and concern over my furbaby. She was so appreciative of her gift made with love and admiration for a young lady so dedicated to her profession.

I printed his picture onto fabric and sewed it to the back of the table runner with a few words of appreciation.

I think this is long enough for my first post of 2022. My first blog post this year - shameful.....
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Well we have had a move back to Kwa-Zulu Natal (it was Natal when we left 31 years ago) and while extremely traumatic, I can call us settled; well that is myself. Dave drives down to Waterfall every weekend as he is still very involved with our business in Harrismith, in fact really does not see the need to retire just yet, so living apart during the week it must be for the moment. I miss beautiful Harrismith and farm life with dogs, cats, chickens, pigs and horses but I definitely do not miss the bitterly cold winters! Harrismith provided an ideal country town where our 4 children grew up enjoying the outdoors and a close family environment. All good things must come to an end as there are better opportunities that lie ahead. This brings me to the next stage in my life which has led me to update my blog!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As many of my readers and friends know, I have been a passionate quilter for 30 years and in particular, free motion quilting. Last year in 2016 I completed the Teachers' Accreditation course run by the South African Quilters' Guild. While I have been teaching quilting for a few years, this now enables me to teach at the National Quilt Festivals should I so desire. I love to teach and spread the word about quilting and free-motion quilting encouraging others to jump in and just "do it"! The local Village Quilters Guild have welcomed me and made me feel so at home; both new friends and "old" friends from waaaay back when!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Entering quilts into competitions for judging is not really my thing, however, one of my quilts won 3rd place in the last National Quilt Festival which is held bi-annually. I blogged about it here if you would like to read it. Last year was a heavy year with studying so not much leisure quilting was done as those who have done the course will know! Come the National Quilt Festival to be held in Port Elizabeth this year, through encouragement from students, I thought that I would enter one of my quilts on which I had worked for over a year. But alas, it was too big!!!! The restriction of 2.5m measurement for one side did not allow for my 2.7m square quilt. So, a long story short, I was invited to enter it in the World Quilt Competition. It is called "My Journey in Free Motion" and has been selected to be judged at the competition and will hang on display during the event from 17-19 August 2017 in Manchester, New Hampshire. The quilts will also tour the United States and will be displayed at the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza (Greater Philadelphia Area) in September, in October at the Pacific International Quilt Festival (San Francisco Bay Area) and at World Quilt Florida in Orlando, Florida in January 2018.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I received this yesterday to be used in my profile on Facebook, Instagram and any social media I choose. So it is with a humble attitude, yet great pride....
My excuse is that I am studying at the moment - doing the Quilt Teachers Accreditation Course - and writing assignments is really stretching my brain and my nerves! I've now completed my second round of written assignments and am busy with the two practicals, machine applique and hand applique.

Apologies to my followers but will try and blog a little more often. I'm preparing for a fabric postcard talk and demo for guild on Friday. Here's what I made today.

There is a tutorial for making Fabric Postcards under "Tutorials" on my blog.

Happy quilting,
Anyway a quick update. Unfortunately we had to cancel our long awaited trip to Meryl, my cousin in Brussels for Christmas and New Year. Life happens....... My hubby was not well, ending the year with 2 diagnosed melanomas which needed surgery. They were caught early so all is well now.

I am devoting this year to studying (at the age of 67)!!! and in view of all the teaching I have been doing for the past two years, I've decided to take the plunge and do the Teachers' Accreditation Course. I'm not sure what this makes me in the end but it will allow me to teach at the National Quilt Festivals etc and as free motion quilting is my absolute passion and my love of teaching it and encouraging others to do it, I've decided to do the course. I'm sure it will make me a better and more informed teacher in the end! The course entails a great amount of research, answering assignments and of course some practical work as well. I have limited my teaching this year and only have two local quilt festival engagements - Indaba in May and Quilt in Clarens in July. They both involve a whole week so I'm putting in a lot of work now to make up for these two weeks! There won't be a lot from me this year on my blog.

A girl cannot cut herself off completely from quilting for a whole year, so I have joined in with Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson in the Splendid Sampler quilt-a-long (see the badge on the right side bar). There will be 2 x 6½ inch blocks a week which started on Sunday 14 February. Everyone is welcome to join in; there are something like 17,000 already who have made the pledge, so hopefully I will be able to keep up! Here is my first block, it should be fun. A simple little heart for Valentines Day!

Thank you for visiting. I will occasionally post throughout the year, perhaps even some results as my assignments are returned to me!!!

Happy quilting,
They have a superb range of beautiful quilt cotton fabric and all the necessary extras that us quilters need for stitching and finishing our quilts including lovely threads for free motion quilting. They also have knitting wool, embroidery threads and patterns, beads, silk ribbon and all manner of interesting haberdashery that caters for many different crafts. Of course, the full range of Elna machines that they are very happy to demonstrate. You can have your machine serviced there under Hennie's watchful eye while you are shopping for fabrics!

It is one of my favourite venues for holding free motion quilting classes and yesterday's class was no exception. Here we all are looking rather exhausted after a very busy day.

I am very excited to at last add my whole cloth quilt to my blog. It is from a class I did with Issie Steenberg about a year ago and I've worked on it intermittently as my fmq teaching has allowed. The 16 inch squares are divided diagonally and each one has a different pattern quilted within the diagonal lines. It was a mammoth task trying to think of different fmq patterns to quilt in each quarter. I think there is one repeat which I had obviously forgotten about having stitched it a few months previously.
The quilted squares were trimmed to 16 inches and joined together using the quilt-as-you-go method.
Here are a few more close-ups of some of the quilting.

I quilted loose feathers around the entire border and then joined it also with quilt-as-you-go after the 36 squares had been joined together. There was a lot of hand stitching in the joining but the finish is far nicer than machine stitching.

I was delighted to see this quilt displayed at the Clarens Quilt Festival. It drew quite a bit of attention and inspired many people to take my Free Motion Quilting class. It is not a very good photo as there was a lot of light in the room.
There are surely not enough hours in the day to get everything done. My free motion quilting classes have really kept me busy the past few months with a full program coming up in September and October which will now be involving me in a few road trips in South Africa. But I am not complaining as I absolutely love teaching and sharing what I know and what I have done with so many people.

Back to what this blog is about - our National Quilt Festival held in July at Kearsney College near the beautiful Valley of a Thousand Hills in Natal. I decided to enter my "Swoon" Quilt, a pattern from Camille Roskelley which I had been making for a few months and where I had free motion quilted in the negative spaces. The fabrics I used were from Kaffe Fassett's collection and I used Aurifil thread to do the quilting. I was very happy with the result and really did not expect to win a 3rd place ribbon for my effort. Here is a pic of the quilt hanging in the exhibition.
It was fun and exciting to see how the ladies managed and couldn't believe the difference in their stitching from the beginning of the classes and when we finished in the afternoon. I'm not sure if it was quite what they were expecting but nevertheless every single lady very quickly managed to execute the different stitches, each in their own way and style.
Here are a few photos of our exciting days; the time went so quickly and I only managed three photos!
A huge thank you goes to Judy and Chantal at Cotton Tale and for the delicious eats they served at tea time!

I look forward to sharing more of what I have learned of this fascinating art in the near future. We will hold follow-on classes with these ladies in a few months time. I can't wait to see what they have achieved over the next few months! Well done all of you!
What started off teaching friends how to piece a quilt, led to acquaintances hearing about it and wanting other classes organized, to complete strangers approaching me to learn this exciting hobby. But my love and passion for free motion quilting steered me into many more opportunities and so life has become far more hectic. Added to that, we have our National Quilt Festival coming up in July 2015 and I am trying to complete a quilt for the festival as well as making up samples for the classes. Two classes at Cotton Tale on 16 and 17 March, Bethlehem on 26 March and I am teaching at Quilt in Clarens in July.

Here are some photos of my two dear friends Joan and Corrie who started off quilting classes in my little sewing room last year. This was actually their third class where they are learning Paper Piecing.
I have enjoyed the quilting classes and we have had a lot of fun and laughter, and not too many ripped out seams!!

One of my free motion quilting classes was held at Lalis, a lovely guest house in Harrismith. We were so busy that this is the only photo I managed to take. It doesn't look like it, but we had a lot of fun in this class! I must have just captured the concentration! Poor Emmie was really battling with her old Bernina which led to her buying a brand new Elna. Way to go Emmie.
At about this time we had a visit from Issie Steenberg, a lovely lady from Bloemfontein who came to give us all a class on the "quilt as you go" method. Fortunately the girls had all had a bit of practice with free motion quilting as Issie's class was not a beginners class. Now six months later, two of the ladies have finished the quilts they started in the class. Here they are, aren't they stunning!
When I decide to do something or set myself a target (mainly for quilting) haha, I do tend to stick with it no matter how long it takes. I have achieved my goal for the year having now completed my last quilt for the grandies. In fact I made 6 (no not another one on the way or at least I hope not) and decided that one of them was not really suitable. So it will sit in the cupboard - waiting!!!

I will give you just a little peak as it really wouldn't be right to have the big display until the children have received them; so here they are...

This has been a labour of love and I have enjoyed every minute of making them and I'm sure they will be enjoyed by each one - 3 boys and 2 girls. Guesses which are boys and which are girls!!

My teaching schedule began in about April of this year kicking off with the very basics ie straightening of fabric and rotary cutting and making very basic Disappearing 9 patch table toppers. Paper piecing was a fun class and the ladies who completed their projects were really thrilled with how they turned out. In another class I had to give one of the ladies a lesson on how to use her sewing machine first, so there is always a surprise starting a new class!

Fee motion quilting is my absolute passion as I have mentioned in earlier posts back in 2012 and these are the classes I most enjoy teaching. It is so exciting to see someone who has never attempted fmq before becoming quite comfortable with moving her quilt sandwich around under the needle by the completion of the lesson. But of course the bottom line being practice, practice, practice and more practice!

Well it's the first week in September and the children's quilts are done which gives me a bit of breathing space before starting on my next project. Hmm I wonder what it will be as I have so many ideas and so many things on my bucket list that I can't wait to make. But first I need to make a postcard, in fact two, for our fabric postcard swap group and also a birthday block, another group to which I belong. See here for my tutorial on how to make a fabric postcard.

Thank you for stopping by and I will really try to post more regularly now.

As usual, happy quilting,

When was it made, what pattern did I use and what fabrics did I choose?

I made this quilt in 2012 for Mom's 90th birthday which we celebrated in the Drakensberg Mountains in Natal, South Africa. She lives in her own little cottage in a retirement village in the leafy suburb of Kloof. The block pattern I used is from McCalls Quilting and is called "Best of All". I have always loved this block and here was just the occasion to make it into a quilt. I made a small alteration in the placement of colours in each block which is not according to the pattern. I used mostly fabrics from my stash for the blocks and purchased the fabrics for the sashing, cornerstones and borders.

Have I shown it in any shows?

No I have not. I finished it on the eve of her birthday and gave it to her the next day.

What memories or people does it make me think of?

Obviously it makes me think of my Mom and I remember the anticipation I felt while making it as I knew that she would be so thrilled to receive it. I think it also makes her feel proud of "her talented daughter" as she puts it!!!

What do I like best about it?

I think because it gave me the opportunity to make a pattern that I had had for so long and because free motion quilting is my absolute passion, it gave me a chance to do many different quilting designs on it.

How did I grow as a quilter while making it?

Oh without a doubt I found I had to be extremely accurate with my cutting and piecing as there are so many pieces in each block; more so than I had ever been and so, therefore, realizing how important accuracy and ¼ inch seams are.

If I made it again, what would I do differently (if anything)?

I would not change a thing, actually I probably wouldn't ever make it again!

Where is the quilt now?

It has pride of place on my Mom's bed. At age 92 she takes it off every evening to get into bed and puts it on every morning when she remakes it.

Christa Watson's work has been a huge encouragement and eye-opener and I also watched Elizabeth Hartman's video "Inspired Modern Quilts" on Craftsy giving me a window into what I find to be quite exciting. Oh goodness, after 26 years or so of traditional quilting it is going to be a completely different mind set to get around, but.... I think I'm going to be hooked! Well I tried my hand at a string quilt which is not really "modern" as string quilts have been around for yonks, but definitely a move from the traditional.

Being quite an "orderly" gal, I felt that I had to have some kind of uniformity by keeping the gold colour strips the same width and in the same place in all the blocks, while the rest of them were cut all different widths and sewn randomly onto the newsprint squares which were cut to finish at10 inches square. It was a great opportunity to destash and I must say quite liberating to sew. Yes, I could go for this!

I used a hand dyed backing fabric from Amafu Fabrics and as it was not quite wide enough at 150cm, I learned from Glenda how to do a diagonal seam to save fabric. A great idea I must say!
I finished it off with an all-over design which I frequently use on my quilts and finally bound it with the same backing fabric.
I love how this single size bed quilt turned out and it will probably head off to a grandchild.

Thanks for visiting. I have another modern quilt in the pipeline......
Where does time go; it's already April and 6 weeks since my last blog post!

I have finished a few smaller projects which I'd like to show. First is a baby quilt for my nephew and his wife. Unlike most parents-to-be these days, they have not wanted to know the sex of their second baby and while I quite like the idea of not knowing - after all we were not afforded this knowledge when we had our children - it makes it easier for colour choices for the quilter! So now I have the task of finding yellows and greens from my stash of "stash packs". Hmm a bit uninteresting and unfortunately I was very limited with my choices. I made half square triangles with the 5 inch charms and a plain white fabric and this is what I came up with.

I quilted it with my favourite "Jester's Hat" pattern and little ducks in the border with their French Knots eyes!
Look at all this gorgeous fabric I have just received. I have been ordering fabric on special offers for the past few months and having it delivered to a very dear friend who now lives in the States. They have come back "home" for a few weeks and brought it out with them.
We removed the old shelves that held too much fabric of all sorts - dress material off-cuts as well as upholstery and curtaining fabric and cut the shelving into smaller pieces that would hold my quilting stash ONLY!

How blessed I am to have such a handy husband who doesn't mind doing the dirty work as well. Of course someone had to be in charge of the camera!!

Next we patched up the holes and moved the furniture back into place. The rest was up to me to do the sorting out and putting in place. The photo below shows part of my stash neatly folded on the shelves. I made a curtain to hang over them to keep off the dust, of which there is plenty in the windy season on the farm, and I have also found that the light from the window is inclined to fade the fabric. The drawers also contain charm packs, layer cakes and jelly rolls as well as threads and bits of lace etc. The steel cupboard contains files with patterns, fancy quilting threads, quilt magazines and off-cuts of batting. My aim was to have my sewing room completely clutter free in which to work and I think that I have achieved just that.

When I am quilting a large quilt, I move the gate-legged table to the left of my sewing table onto which the bulk of the quilt will lie.

I am so thrilled with the layout now of my sewing room and sew much easier to <strike>work</strike> sew in! Can you see my "work in progress" which lies on the top shelf of the chest of drawers. It is waiting for its backing which will arrive tomorrow with Glenda from Amafu Fabrics. Glenda is calling in at Harrismith on her way to Johannesburg/Pretoria where she will have a display of her lovely fabrics at one of the quilt guilds. I can't wait to buy more of her Bottom Line threads and Superior needles.

Thank you for stopping by to see where I "do it"!!

Happy quilting,

Well it's a new year and to start it off I have joined in a group called "Project Quilting" where every week a challenge is set to be completed within a week! My original thought was, "Wow this could prove a bit hectic", but then realizing that we are not necessarily thinking bed quilts but a smaller project that can be finished comfortably within the week.

This weeks' theme was "String Along With Me" with a suggestion to "think out of the box". So okay, that rules out squares so I then decided to cut strips of newspaper about 4 inches wide and started adding strips of different widths and also making them "wonky". After sewing and adding and sewing and adding until I thought the strip was long enough, I then started another and then another.

Shucks, I wonder if I've bitten off more than I can chew? But anyway, I think it's good to have a goal to work towards!

Well my new year got off to rather a sad start. I decided that to have 3 sewing machines was a little over the top and really cluttered up my sewing space and heck, what good does it serve to have sewing machines packed away in a cupboard. So a sweet lady from Botswana was the first to answer my advert. I cleaned it up and gave it a good oiling in the hook - not that it wasn't cleaned and oiled regularly - but quilters know the fluff from batting that gets caught in the bobbin area, gave it a very loving stroke and sent it on it's way...... She (not it) has given me many years of happy sewing and helped me get back into quilting after a break of a few years. I started off my passion of free motion quilting on her and produced I'm told, some very beautiful work.

A quilt I made for my Mum

This was I think, the last quilt that I made on my Bernina. It was for my old Mum for her 90th birthday. She has it on her bed every day.

I know she will be loved by her new owner who will also have many happy hours of sewing.

I have another sewing machine - an Elna Automatic that I've had for 46 years, being a gift from hubby when we got engaged. She still sews beautifully and I use her for piecing when my new machine is set up for free motion quilting. She has been used by daughters and daughters-in-law but is now my precious stand-by in case of need. She has great sentimental value as the first garment I made on her was my wedding dress! Mmm I should actually take a photo of it (wedding dress); will have to find it!!

So goodbye faithful Bernina......

The last class I did with Craftsy was Carol Ann Waugh's Stupendous stitching. We all have those lovely decorative stitches on our sewing machines but when do we actually use them in our quilting. Are you like me answering, "Well never". In her class, Carol Ann shows how these stitches can be used in a very simple but very effective way to create something just a little different. Here is the sample I made from watching her class.

Stupendous Stitching Sample

In this small sample I used different decorative stitches in a variety of colours as well as some hand embroidery using simple straight stitches and French Knots.

Hmm I then had the idea of using this method to make a new cover for the back of my hand mirror on my dressing table. Hubs gave me this dressing table set probably 50+ years ago when I was still at school - wow imagine that - and all that is left of it is the hand mirror which I happen to use every single day even though the mirror was cracked across the top. So I set to work cutting out a rough pattern the shape of the mirror and ironing on a piece of vilene which stabilizes the top fabric on which I will do the decorative stitching.

Then comes the embellishing and fancy stitching and finishing off with some hand embroidery.

I then added a piece of batting and quilted around the decorative stitching.

The next step was to pack the template behind the prepared piece and somehow come up with a way to keep its shape. I crisscrossed some stitching at the back which seemed to do the trick!

I had a new piece of mirror cut to exactly the same shape as the metal frame but unfortunately the small glass factory in town in our local town could not bevel the edges. What a disappointment as I then had to undo all the crisscross stitching at the back and cut the quilted top to exactly the same shape as the backing as the bulk of the mirror as well as my prized piece of stupendous stitching would not fit into the small groove of the mirror frame. Oh well, it still worked after I glued the edge of the top onto the cardboard template which I then left intact and it fitted beautifully.

I polished up the very tarnished handle and frame, and wallah.....

Not a complicated pattern but oh the material was a real sod to sew. The netting with glued on sequins was my problem. My needle kept on getting gummed up with the glue and I had to stop every few inches to clean the needle which was very frustrating to say the least. Never again please Vicky!!!! In the meantime here is the finished dress and I will post a pic with it on her at a later stage.
I have finally finished my interpretation of the 2013 Block of the Month which is given by Craftsy. Laura Nownes was the instructor this year. Overall I felt that this was a course more suited to the more advanced quilter as opposed to last year where the beginner coped without too much trouble. It was great learning new techniques for traditional blocks and I felt that Laura put her classes across very well and in just enough detail.

I did not take photos along the way throughout the year as I sewed my blocks in little bits of spare time I had during the day amongst my other sewing projects! Here is the finished quilt.

I used fabric from my stash as well as a few bought fat quarters. I chose autumn colours this time as opposed to the "brights" I used last year. Note to self: Please concentrate next time on the orientation of half square triangles when used in a border! I had to unpick 2 of the borders as I had the dark half on the wrong side. Those of you who have used HSTs in a border will know what I'm talking about. Grrr!

I have recently watched Angela Walters' class on Dot to Dot Quilting and decided that it would work quite well on this quilt for the quilting. Straight lines were the order of the day here with a few figure eights in the narrower strips. Mmm sewing straight lines took a bit of practice but I must say that towards the end it was a piece of cake. Haha! Here are a few close-ups.
I used left-over fabric for the binding which I sewed on by machine and hemmed by hand onto the back. This was a fun project but I'm not sure if I will do another sampler next year, if there is one.

Thank you for stopping by. My next project is a dress for Tyla, my granddaughter who is going to a family wedding next month. I will post pics if she is agreeable!

Happy quilting,
We are back from our fabulous cruise of the Greek Islands on board the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship. While trying to get my feet back on the ground and see to "home" things, I have written a blog about our fantastic holiday. You are welcome to read about it here.

I have a border from our Round Robin to complete and the October BOM with Craftsy to do, so without further ado let me catch up with my quilting. Can't wait to get back to my sewing machine!

Filling in dozens of required forms, applying for Schengen Visas (that is another story) but in short we were informed that all rules and requirements had been changed and added to in June 2013 hence us being sent from pillar to post to photo copy shops to internet cafes and finally to the local police station for certification stamps - all in the city of Durban where we found two-way streets having been changed to one-way etc etc etc. What a nightmare it was but a huge surprise when we were informed exactly a week later that we could fetch our approved and completed visas! Actually I think the Greek Consulate in Johannesburg were so tired of our phone calls that they wanted us out of their hair!!! And of course updating the wardrobe has required many trips to the larger town of Bethlehem and Pietermaritzburg and on coming back home to Harrismith, I found that I could have got most of what I needed right here on our doorstep! Oh well there's always an excuse to see if the grass is greener on the other side!

I haven't entirely ignored my sewing room though. It is not quilt related but I have redone a little Dolly Varden dressing table which my Dad made for my elder daughter Kim when she was a little girl - dare I say about 35 years ago!! I then redecorated it for my younger daughter Heather when Kim outgrew it and now it's had a new makeover for my youngest granddaughter Tyla for her sixth birthday on 9/11. The only instruction was that it had to be pink!

So there we go. Also 2 completed fabric postcards for September and October, both of which are in the post for recipients given to us for a postcard swap that I've been in this year. Sorry can't show pics as they have not yet reached their destination in the USA!

Now back to planning our itinerary. I will post a link to our cruise blog just before we leave on 2 October 2013 for those who might be interested in following our long awaited and exciting Mediterranean Cruise. Thank you for stopping by for a brief update.

Happy quilting dear friends,
You can read about it here to see the instructions which we were given. We will be overseas on our exciting and long awaited cruise on the Queen Elizabeth in October, arriving home mid October so I thought I had better get my piece done as it might be a tad difficult to get into it as soon as we arrive home!

I chose to do these little Sawtooth Stars with the tiny pieces cut between 1¼ and 2 inches square and then pieced together to form the star pattern in colours that would tone with our given border fabric.

Sawtooth Stars

I think the colours blend quite well and the finished piece measures 22 inches (56cm) square. There was not enough border fabric over to do the binding so I chose one of the fabrics from one of the stars.

I quilted it in an all over feather pattern perhaps better seen from the back.
Actually I'm really enjoying the smaller projects at the moment, it's a change from the larger quilts, which I really love making, but with hectic days planning our overseas trip, it's nice to start a project that doesn't take too much time and concentration while waiting for emails to arrive with questions answered re flight enquiries, insurances required etc etc.

I was needing something for our round dining room table and just never found a pattern that appealed to me. Then along came this cute pattern from Julie at thecraftyquilter.com for a winter table topper which I could make with fabric on hand without having to make a trip to buy fabric. So without further ado....

Winter Seeds Table Topper

I just did a whole lot of straight line and echo quilting which I feel emphasises the shape of the "seeds". Julie has a very good tip on how to stitch the binding on the inside curves. A quick link back to her blog is here.

The category I chose for mine was "Traditional - Large" being over 150cm square. It is my Chocolat et Créme which you have probably seen before on my blog. I pieced it in a design which left me with a lot of negative space allowing me to express my passion in free motion quilting. I know that it was not perfect as there were one or two areas where I found that I had too much fabric over which to quilt, therefore forming a crease. But I've learned my lesson - stitch in the ditch ESS - EVERY STINKING SEAM; Peggy Martin's advice in a tutorial I did on Craftsy. Had I done that, my mishap would never have happened! But anyway I was really thrilled with the Judges' comments and through looking at what everyone else had done, I don't think I had done too badly!
Oh my word! This quilt was definitely something special. It measured 6.38m by 3.34m and was completed in 3 months. The 15 "windows" once completed were sent to people who had the necessary equipment required to join the blocks together and quilt them. It has been donated to the War Museum in Bloemfontein as part of the Centenary celebrations of the "Vrouemonument". (Monument to the women).
